Future of Energy Specialist Roundtable
At SGN, we recognise the need to replace fossil fuels to meet net zero targets set by the UK and Scottish Governments. As a society, we’re going to need every tool in the box to decarbonise heating, one of the biggest contributors to our nations carbon emissions. As one of the UK’s gas distribution networks, we’re exploring different ways to do this to ensure we all have choice and that no one is left behind.
In this online event, specialist stakeholders from within our network were invited to hear from Tony Green, SGN’s Future of Energy Director, on how we are taking action to help decarbonise our networks. The event also provided an opportunity for the invited stakeholders to share their ideas and views on how SGN can meet the challenge of net zero.
We’re beginning to work on our business plan for the next Gas Distribution price control period 2026 – 2031 (RIIO-GD3). The insights gained through this event and future engagement activities will be invaluable as we make key decisions on where we invest time and money to strike the right balance between stakeholder priorities.

Key insights
There is strong support for more investment in low-carbon energy solutions, with SGN being part of a whole systems approach, collaborating with others such as utilities, local authorities and government departments at a national level.
Increased use of green gas – biomethane and hydrogen – is seen as an important component of a whole system approach to the decarbonisation of energy. Raising the profile of the options, and the benefits they offer, to help inform government policy decision-making is seen as necessary.
There is support for increased investment in hydrogen infrastructure. While it was acknowledged that there is still a lot of work to do to understand how best to use, integrate and manage hydrogen as a more universal fuel source.
