Environmental Performance Specialist Roundtable
At SGN we’re committed to accelerating the UK towards a shared net-zero future by 2045 by reducing our business carbon footprint and decarbonising the gas transported through our network.
A fundamental part of our planning process is to continuously listen to our customer and stakeholder views, using them to inform our plans and acting on them where we can.
This online event brought together key stakeholders form within our network to share their ideas and views on how SGN can continue to strive towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future. It provided a chance for stakeholders to hear an overview of our Sustainability Strategy and Environmental Action Plan, with discussions on key topics like carbon emissions, the circular economy, climate resilience and wider collaboration between SGN and partners.
As we begin working on our business plan for the next Gas Distribution price control period 2026 – 2031 (RIIO-GD3), such insight will be invaluable as we make key decisions on where we invest time and money to strike the right balance between stakeholder priorities.

Key insights
Stakeholders strongly support leakage reduction initiatives as they felt this is the area in which SGN can make the biggest positive difference, particularly considering the impact of methane as a greenhouse gas.
A reduction in business carbon footprint is supported. This is both for its potential to help SGN achieve significant gains in addressing its impact on the environment and for the positive influence SGN could be others, particularly within our supply chain. Stakeholders described potential benefits for SGN’s reputation and attractiveness as an employer.
Offsetting harder-to-abate areas has very little support amongst stakeholders and should be used as a last resort.
SGN should work collaboratively with our supply chain, the local community, partner agencies and regulators to tackle climate risks together.
